This is one of my top two favorite paddles in all of Georgia. It has scenery, it is wild and clean, and plenty of excitement around every river bend. It’s probably not a first timer paddle, but it makes for a nice step up from the normally very flat water of the Chattahoochee River.
So if you have a little bit of the adventurous spirit and can handle 13 miles of river paddling…well come out and join us on this river gem. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Plus, we’ll make sure to stop at the landmark Toccoa Swinging Bridge. It crosses over the river and makes for a great spot to sight-see and have lunch/snack.
Friday March 13th, 2020 at 10am we will be meeting at Sandy Bottom boat ramp. The boat ramp is located at GPS coordinates 34.786116, -84.239750 which is located in a dead cell zone of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Blue Ridge GA. This is a nice dirt parking lot with excellent river access. This will be the end location of our journey, we’ll meet up here and then jump into 1-2 cars and drive upriver around 13 miles.
The drop-in point is called Deep Hole Campground. We should put in around 11am here. It’s a scenic river campground and provides beautiful access to the river. The first 6 miles is a combination of farmland and forest. It is some of the more scenic paddling you will get. At some point, the river plunges into the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. There is a stretch of a few miles that is free of any signs of man. It is awesome!
We will definitely stop at the Toccoa Swinging Bridge for lunch. There are some decent sets of rapids at this point approaching a class II. They are exciting and provide a nice test for paddlers.
I always tell folks this shouldn’t be a first time paddle, but if you have some mild kayak experience it is worth it. It is a long stretch of probably 5 hours and 13 river miles. The river moves pretty fast so you don’t need to do any major paddling. Let the river do most of the work.
We should finish up our “most excellent adventure” by 3p or so. If you can, make a full day of it! There are some nice nearby restaurants and even a winery, so when you finish up paddling you can go have a relaxing dinner or drink. I love the area.
But for this trip be sure to bring lunch, beverage, sunscreen, water shoes, and be sure to have a water bag to protect phones or valuable electronics. Also, bring a change of clothes. This trip will be sure to get you wet. Its unavoidable, but that is part of the fun.
If you would like to reserve a single kayak for this trip, call or text me at (678) 920-3944. Cost for single kayak on this trip is $50. I also allow anyone to bring their own kayak but will charge $25 if I haul your kayak on my trailer.
I am super excited for upcoming kayak events. We will try to choose different locations and rivers throughout the year. If you like this one, be sure to sign up for my newsletter. And as always…if you have a group of your own that would like to rent please let me know. There are few places we won’t go. Just ask!
